Conducting In-Person Attunements

A Reiki attunement opens the natural energy channels in the body. After the attunement, the student will be able to channel Reiki energy more effectively. This heightened ability to channel Reiki is permanent and lasts for a lifetime.

The attunement does not make the student a healer. The student becomes a channel for Reiki energy which is the healer. The energy is drawn in by the recipient, directed by universal intelligence and knows where, when, what and how to heal.

Due to the oral tradition and secrecy that surrounded traditional Reiki teaching, the attunement process and symbols used can vary from Reiki Master to Reiki Master.

This does not affect the power or the effectiveness of the attunements. The recipient of the attunement should be relaxed and opened to receive the initiation.

The Reiki attunement is straight-forward and takes 10-15 minutes to perform, though it may take longer to include additional healing work, clearing or rebalancing for the recipient if you choose. The student should sit on a chair with their feet flat on the floor.

Their hands are in front of their chest, palms together in prayer position. Generally, the student can remove all jewelry, glasses and shoes as some individuals say that jewelry and metal can interfere with energy flow since the metal holds energy. Removing shoes may assist in grounding.

It is important to remember that in the attunement process, we are working with energy that has wisdom far beyond our understanding, so as a Reiki master, you will be guided more by intuition than procedural guidelines.

Crown to Crown Reiki Attunements

The crown to crown attunement is the simplest way to attune another person to Reiki. Activate all Reiki symbols by projecting them above the recipient’s head and stating or mentally intending to attune this individual to a specific level of Reiki.

Then allow the power and wisdom of Reiki to take over; allowing the attunement to run to completion. An example of the mental intention is: "I call upon Reiki, the universal life force to attune  (recipient’s name) to Reiki level I in the interests of their highest good."

Once you activate the Reiki energy and the attunement by intention either with or without consciously using the symbols, the energy will flow into your crown chakra and throughout your body crossing over to the student's aura.

The attunement will run until it is completed clearing blocks, opening channels, connecting the energies and permanently enabling the student to use Reiki.

Set the intention that the crown to crown attunement be in harmony with the sole purpose and highest good of the recipient. Use your intuition to guide you on how long the crown to crown connection/attunement needs to be.

To enhance the experience for the recipient, mentally intone specific intentions during the attunement. You may silently intone that the recipient’s crown, third eye, heart, hands, eyes, throat and feet chakras, and all other appropriate channels receive the ability to use and share Reiki, removing any blocks.

You may intend their connection to Reiki to be permanent, uplifting and inspiring, and bring healing abilities that will best serve them in their future Reiki practice.

For the second degree crown to crown attunement, you can intend that the recipient be able to use the second degree techniques with or without symbols.

For the master crown to crown attunement you can intend that the recipient is attuned to Reiki master/teacher level enabling them to teach and attune others to Reiki.

You may add that you would like them to be able to develop their ability to attract others to Reiki so they continue to spread the love, joy and gift of Reiki.

With practice and personal development, you will move beyond simple verbalization and begin to internalize and perceive the attunement process on an energetic level. You may also become more aware of images, information about the recipient and be able to sense the process of the attunement as it unfolds.

Many recipients can also feel the stages and changes in the attunement ceremony as it progresses. Not everyone can feel energy, see or sense anything profound. In fact, they may only notice a subtle change during or after the attunement.

Like a Reiki session, every recipient of the Reiki attunement has a unique experience that is perfect for them. There is no correct or incorrect way to experience Reiki.

The attunement is concluded with the intention of the connection between the sender and receiver being closed. Set the intention of gratitude and appreciation and end the attunement. An example of the intention could be: “With gratitude, the attunement is now complete."

Preparing for the Reiki Attunement Ceremony

There are many different ways to perform Reiki attunements (See Checklist: In Person Attunement Preparation for Reiki Master).

They are all effective as long as the recipient is open and willing to receive the attunement, your intention as the Reiki master is clear and you have the desire to pass on the gift of Reiki to your student.

Remember all variations in methods will work because intention is the key. Use the one that resonates and feels right for you and your students.

Combined Reiki Level I, II and III Attunements

Each level of attunements can be done separately or with one attunement ceremony. Please see the provided reference in this course for a step by step guide.
